L’institut des Jeunes Sourds, intitulé à l’époque l’Ecole des Sourds et Muets, est créé en 1827 au centre-ville de Nancy par Joseph PIROUX, professeur et éducateur, précurseur dans l’éducation des sourds. Depuis, l’établissement s’est développé et a diversifié ses activités, tout en gardant sa spécificité d’enseignement et d’éducation auprès des sourds et des malentendants.
